With their feathered legs and calm nature, they once helped around the reserve, pulling wagons you can still spot in the Farmyard today.

Scotland

Clydesdales originated in the Clyde Valley of Scotland, where they were developed in the 18th century as hardworking farm horses.

Habitat

Grasslands & Pastures

Today, they are found on farms, in show rings, and in working roles around the world. They thrive in open pasture with shelter and regular care.

Diet

Herbivores

Clydesdale horses are herbivores and eat pasture grass, hay. grains and fresh water. Because of their size, they require significantly more feed than lighter horse breeds.

Behaviour

Gentle

Known as true “gentle giants,” Clydesdales are calm, social, and eager to please. Intelligent and easy to work with, they may be big in size but are known for their kind, curious, and affectionate nature.

Size

163-183 cm

Adults typically stand 16–18 hands high (163–183 cm at the shoulder) and weigh 700–1,000 kg. Their long white “feathers” around the lower legs are a distinctive feature.

Life Span

20-25 years

With proper care, Clydesdales can live 20–25 years, maintaining their strength and calm demeanour throughout their life.

Conservation Status

Not at Risk

While not endangered, Clydesdales are considered a heritage breed, and preserving them helps maintain traditional farm horse lines.
